Population, Health, and Environment: Journalist Seminar
Exploring Population, Health, and Environment Linkages in East Africa
in conjunction with
Regional Conference on “Population, Health, and Environment: Integrated Development for East Africa”
What do population growth, HIV/AIDS, and public health have to do with natural resources, food security, and poverty? How are East Africans responding to these interrelated challenges in their communities and through national policies? How can the media more effectively report on these issues?
The Population Reference Bureau (Washington, D.C.) is pleased to announce a unique seminar and field experience for journalists.
What: Exploring Population, Health, and Environment Linkages in East Africa
When: November 12-16, 2007

In this seminar, participating print and broadcast journalists will:
Gain New Knowledge: Experts will provide the latest information in the areas of natural resource conservation, HIV/AIDS, population and development, and the linkages between these issues.
Build Skills: Skills sessions will allow journalists to learn new techniques in investigative journalism, interpreting and citing data, and identifying resources for credible information on population, health and the environment.
Interact with Communities: Participants will spend a day visiting a field site where local communities are planning and implementing programs that integrate activities in the areas of population, health and the environment.
Participate in a regional conference: Journalists will have the unique opportunity to attend conference sessions, attend mini-workshops, and interact with PHE experts.
Generate Stories: Participating journalists will be given opportunities to write and file stories about their experiences throughout the course of the seminar.
Application Process:
12 print and broadcast journalists from Ethiopia, Tanzania, Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda will be selected and funded for this seminar, which includes transportation, lodging, and meals during the seminar. Funding is provided by the United States Agency for International Development. Interested candidates should complete and submit the attached application no later than October 1, 2007. Selection Criteria:
Strong candidates for this seminar will demonstrate the following characteristics:
- 5 – 7 years of journalism experience with a high-circulation news outlet
- A demonstrated interest in reporting on population, health or environmental issues
- Demonstrated support from editor/manager to attend the five-day seminar
