Fighting Air Pollution in Mexico City and São Paulo
Mexico City has some of the worst air pollution in the world. The city’s residents lose 2.5 million working days a year to health problems caused by particle matter, such as soot. Other Latin American capitals such as São Paulo, Brazil, also rank among the world's worst in terms of outdoor air pollution. Because increases in respiratory and cardiovascular illness and death have been linked to major air pollution, cities are taking steps to clear the air. But these megacities have reduced air pollution levels with new policies and relatively simple technological fixes. (July 2007)

Climate Change, Rural Vulnerabilities, and Migration
In February 2007, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), a panel of international experts assessing the current scientific knowledge on climate asserted that warming of the earth's climate system is "unequivocal." The panel's conclusions are based on mounting evidence of shifts in the climate and consequent effects on ecological processes and biodiversity. Although some estimates of the health effects of climate change have been undertaken, there is still no clear understanding of the potential social effects.

Reporting on Population, Health, and the Environment: A Media Guide for Central American Journalists
This media guide provides data and background information on the connections between population, health, and the environment in Central America. These connections are evident in instances when children are sick with diarrhea from contaminated drinking water, when deforestation leads to mudslides killing villagers, when pesticides for crops gets into the food stream and leads to sickness. This guide will help journalists understand and report on such complex issues about people’s health and the environment. (March 2007)

Of the estimated 46 million induced abortions each year, nearly 19 million are performed in unsafe conditions and/or by unskilled providers and result in the deaths of an estimated 68,000 girls and women. (2006)

Safeguarding the Contraceptive Supply in Latin America in an Era of Donor Phase-Out
International donors, the major suppliers of contraceptives to Latin America, have recently begun to phase out assistance and supplies, producing a gap that Latin American governments have to fill. For most of the region, contraceptive security now requires serious planning and finding options that are affordable so that family planning successes can be maintained. (June 2006)
