Shaping Education on Global Health
In the last five years, interest in global health education has surged. But what should this education look like? What does a person need to know to be literate in global health? At a recent Population Reference Bureau policy seminar sponsored in part by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, a panel of experts gathered to discuss their ideas and vision for global health education. New & Noteworthy in Nutrition (NNN) was first published in 1980 by the World Bank. It is now published by the Population Reference Bureau, and each issue aims to enhance learning opportunities and complement other relevant materials on nutrition. Published every four months, NNN is based on a review of recent literature, news articles, and outcomes of important events and conferences related to nutrition. (Issue 1; December 2007)

Pakistan Still Falls Short of Millennium Development Goals for Infant and Maternal Health
With continuing political turmoil, emergency rule declared, and concerns about how free and fair January elections will be, Pakistan has been under the spotlight recently. But the political arena isn’t the only area where challenges persist. Beneath the surface, more problems are brewing in the sixth most populous country in the world. Some of the challenges are fueled by the country's rapidly growing population, which is making increasing demands on social services, especially the health care system. (December 2007)

National Surveys Trigger Lower Estimates of Global HIV Prevalence, but Pandemic Still Devastates Lives, Families
UNAIDS has released new estimates of the prevalence of the global HIV/AIDS epidemic. In 2007, 33.2 million people are estimated to be infected with HIV. This represents a significant decrease from the estimate made in 2006 of 39.5 million. Much of the impetus for the lowered estimate stems from the results of HIV testing conducted as a part of the Demographic and Health Surveys.(December 2007)

This policy brief, Integrating Population, Health, and Environment in Kenya, is based on the Kenya PHE assessment coordinated by the National Coordinating Agency for Population and Development (NCAPD) and conducted by the University of Nairobi and the Kenya PHE task force between October 2006 and April 2007. The methods used to conduct the assessment in Kenya included a review of relevant government policies and project documents, key informant interviews, site household surveys, and focus group discussions. The methods used to conduct the assessment in Ethiopia included a review of relevant government policies and project documents, key informant interviews, and focus group discussions. (November 2007)

This policy brief, Integrating Population, Health, and Environment in Tanzania, is based on the Tanzania PHE assessment written in 2007 by Dr. N.F. Madulu, formerly of the Institute of Resource Assessment/University of Dar es Salaam, and the members of the Tanzania PHE assessment team. The methods used to conduct the assessment in Tanzania included a review of relevant policies, laws, and project documents; key informant interviews; and field visits to case study sites. PRB's Women's Edition Journalists Cover 'Women Deliver' Conference
At Women Deliver, a global conference marking the 20th anniversary of the launch of the global Safe Motherhood Initiative, more than 1,800 people gathered in London from Oct. 18 to 20, to focus on creating the political will to save the lives and improve the health of women, mothers, and newborns around the world. Nine members of PRB's Women's Edition, a network of journalists, covered the conference, reporting and writing articles for the conference newsletter. (November 2007)
