Child Overweight/Obesity

The Share of Children and Teens Who Are Overweight/Obese Has Increased Since 1999, Highest Among Latinos

The share of all 6-to-19-year-olds who were overweight or obese increased from 30 percent in 1999-2000 to 34 percent in 2011-2012. Four in 10 blacks and Latinos in this age group are overweight or obese, compared with 3 in 10 non-Hispanic whites. Being overweight or obese as a child increases the risk of long-term negative health outcomes, such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.
