In Memoriam: Babatunde Osotimehin

We at the Population Reference Bureau were extremely saddened to hear of the passing of Babatunde Osotimehin, an eminent scholar, global leader, colleague, and friend with whom we had the great fortune to collaborate and to support over the years.

Osotimehin, who had served as executive director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) since January 2011, was a leading champion of many of PRB’s priority issues, including preventing maternal deaths, meeting all demands for family planning, and eliminating harmful practices against women and girls. He was a tireless promoter of sexual and reproductive health and rights for all.

Osotimehin’s presence at an event always raised the bar and made the occasion more memorable and impactful. His inclusive vision and masterful convening powers created countless opportunities for PRB staff and thousands of others to engage decisionmakers and other policy stakeholders.  We will greatly miss his camaraderie and commitment.
