PRB sees the potential of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools to support research, operations, and communications, as well as its risks to our rigor and reputation. PRB’s approach to using AI throughout our organization is to uphold the high quality of our work as our primary focus.
General Principles
Our Staff Are Experts, and AI Cannot Replace This Expertise
We see our staff as our greatest asset. We are experts on demographic data and trends and no generative AI tool can substitute for decades of experience and deep topical knowledge.
We Use AI as a Supportive Tool, Not a Source of Truth
We trust our staff to use generative AI to support drafting, summarizing, programming, brainstorming, and non-substantive editing to improve efficiency and support their work. Our staff understand that outputs from AI tools are considered drafts requiring human review and verification before use. AI tools enhance rather than replace critical thinking, knowledge, and judgment in our final products.
Our Staff Always Verify Accuracy Through Quality Control Measures
From our high editorial standards to our data expertise, PRB’s reputation for stellar work is our strength and is superior to AI generated work. At PRB, AI outputs are not used for fact-checking nor are they treated as authoritative. Staff verify the accuracy, appropriateness, and integrity of any AI-assisted content before including elements of it in PRB work products.
We Ensure Data Privacy and Confidentiality When Using AI
PRB treats generative AI tools carefully with respect to privacy and confidentiality. We do not use personally identifiable information or non-public data or records—including names—in prompts submitted to generative AI tools. We assume that all prompts submitted to public large language models will be stored by providers and used to train future models. We exercise the utmost caution with the information shared with AI tools.
We Disclose When AI Is Used in Substantive Ways
PRB uses generative AI tools to support our work, much in the same way that a search engine, spreadsheet, or programming language is used. If AI tools are used, for example, to produce a visual product, we will disclose its usage.
We Update Our Approach as Technologies Evolve
As AI technologies evolve, PRB will review and revise our policies to align with best practices, emerging risks, and legal requirements.
