Connecting Paths: Integrating Reproductive Health and HIV Services in Kenya

(June 2015) “Connecting Paths: Integrating Reproductive Health and HIV Services in Kenya” is an ENGAGE multimedia presentation that highlights the linkages between reproductive health (RH) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) services as priorities for improving the health and well-being of Kenyans and achieving Kenya’s development goals.

The presentation focuses on the importance of implementing the Minimum Package for Reproductive Health and HIV Integrated Services throughout the country to ensure that all Kenyans, regardless of their HIV status, are accessing reproductive health care. The Minimum Package, developed by the National AIDS & STI Control Programme, Reproductive and Maternal Health Services Unit, and an RH-HIV Integration Technical Working Group, guides and informs implementers and service providers on the minimum requirements in terms of infrastructure; human resources; skill sets and training materials; equipment; commodities and supplies; and monitoring and evaluation that are necessary at every level of care for effective integrated RH and HIV services. Examples of target policy audiences include national and county level government officials and policymakers; donors; health sector leaders; civic society groups working in gender, reproductive health, and HIV; program officials; and journalists.

This 18-minute presentation was developed by Kenya’s National Council for Population and Development, National AIDS & STI Control Programme, Reproductive and Maternal Health Services Unit, and the Population Reference Bureau (PRB), with guidance from a Kenya ENGAGE task force. The presentation was developed with support from USAID Kenya under IDEA—Informing Decisionmakers to Act.

“Connecting Paths: Integrating Reproductive Health and HIV Services in Kenya” is available two formats—with and without a recorded narration. The presentation can be downloaded on the PRB website or streamed via PRB’s YouTube channel; CD-ROMs are also available on request. A user’s guide and key messages handout are also available to provide facilitators with skills and resources to effectively deliver the presentation. Guidance on the technical aspects and requirements of ENGAGE presentations is also available.

With funding from the U.S. Agency for International Development, IDEA—Informing Decisionmakers to Act—increases support among policy audiences for effective health and population programs around the world. By increasing the flow of accurate, understandable information about population, family planning, and reproductive health to policy audiences, IDEA enhances efforts carried out by civil society, the public sector, the development community, and donors. Under IDEA, PRB has developed a series of dynamic multimedia ENGAGE presentations to engage global leaders and country-level policymakers in issues related to family planning, reproductive health, and other key development issues.
