Préserver la santé et bâtir l’avenir du Burkina Faso
Préserver la santé et bâtir l’avenir du Burkina Faso
In Burkina Faso, one in 10 pregnancies ends in an induced abortion. The majority of these abortions are carried out unsafely—that is, using an inappropriate method or by an untrained provider, or both. Unsafe abortion endangers women’s health and lives. It also incurs high costs for the health system and contributes to maternal mortality.
While abortion is legally restricted in Burkina Faso, it is allowed in certain cases. However, many barriers prevent women, especially rural women, from accessing this service. By expanding access to safe abortion within the confines of the law, Burkina Faso can reduce maternal mortality, decrease costs that result from treating complications from unsafe abortion, and help develop the potential of women and girls.
« Préserver la santé et bâtir l’avenir du Burkina Faso : rendre accessible l’avortement sécurisé » (Protecting Health and Building the Future of Burkina Faso: Making Safe Abortion Accessible), is a multimedia advocacy tool, developed in collaboration with the SAFE ENGAGE Task Force in Burkina Faso, that seeks to build awareness of the causes and consequences of unsafe abortions in the country and contribute to expanding access to safe abortion services within the confines of the law.
