FGM/C and Its Health Consequences: Implications for Policy, Advocacy, and Investment

Population Reference Bureau (PRB) is a core partner on the Population Council’s Evidence to End FGM/C: Research to Help Girls and Women Thrive—a UKAID-funded research program to help end female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) within one generation.

Our role is to build the consortium’s capacity for research utilization and develop innovative tools and products to improve how researchers communicate their findings about FGM/C to key decisionmakers.

PRB has developed a web feature, FGM/C and Its Health Consequences: Implications for Policy, Advocacy, and Investment, that offers a clear understanding of the health effects of FGM/C to provide direction for future investment by donors, highlight important knowledge gaps for further research, help medical professionals identify and manage complications, and strengthen advocates’ messages.

Explore the web feature to:

  • Understand the evidence of FGM/C’s health consequences.
  • Identify health effects that require further investigation.
  • Discover how communities can act to end FGM/C.

The web feature is based on a Population Council report, “Health Impacts of FGM/C: A Synthesis of the Evidence,” authored by Samuel Kimani, Jacinta Muteshi, and Carolyne Njue.
