United States: Percent of Population Living Alone
Health improvements and financial gains among older adults, as well as a delay in marriage among younger people, have fueled an increase in the population living alone. In 2013-2017, about 13 percent of adults ages 18 and older were living alone. But the nationwide percentage masks extensive state and local variation: While at least 15 percent of adults were living alone in about 1,100 of the 3,142 U.S. counties, the share was less than 10 percent in about 240 others.
