Infographic. Education Matters–Keeping Girls in School Can Improve Economic Development in Burkina Faso’s Sahel Region
Girls’ educational attainment affects the human capital of Burkina Faso’s future labor force, shaping their economic opportunities and their country’s economic growth.
(2011) Increasing disaster threats not only reflect the onset of events such as earthquakes or floods, but also the changing demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of the population.
Policy Brief: Population and Food Security: Africa’s Challenge (Part 2)
(2012) Almost two of every three people in sub-Saharan Africa live in a rural area, relying principally on small-scale agriculture for their livelihood. Improving agriculture on small farms is critical to reducing hunger.
(December 2008) According to the United Nations (UN), "Population ageing is unprecedented, without parallel in human history and the twenty-first century will witness even more rapid ageing than did the century just past."
(2013) Urban agriculture is helping poor people cope with food scarcity and hunger. Growing crops or raising livestock in backyards or on undeveloped plots of land improves food sources and offers many urban poor a viable income.
Use of Biomarkers in Predicting Health and Mortality
Biomarkers, or biological indicators, are increasingly employed in empirical studies of human populations to understand physiological processes that change with age, diseases whose onset appears linked to age, and the aging process itself.

Program and Policy Implications
Use of Biomarkers in Predicting Health and Mortality
Biomarkers—biological indicators—are increasingly employed in empirical studies of human populations to understand physiological processes that change with age, diseases whose onset appears linked to age, and the aging process itself. The Behavioral and Social Research Program at the National Institute on Aging supports research investigat-ing the link between biological risk factors and health or mortality in the older populations. This newsletter reviews research supported by NIA and other institutions.

(2012) In November 2011, 12 PRB Women's Edition journalists from 11 developing countries traveled to two villages in Senegal, Keur Simbara and Saam Njaay, during the 2011 International Conference on Family Planning to witness the lessons and successes of the Tostan Community Empowerment Program in encouraging the abandonment of female genital cutting and fostering human rights and democracy.
